October 25, 2016
"Alfred’s extensive leadership and international experience will help drive our strategy forward and position The Hartford to be our customers’ first choice for total global insurance protection."

The Hartford has appointed Alfred Bergbauer as vice president and head of multinational underwriting, reporting to Susan Monahan, chief underwriter for Middle Market at The Hartford. In this role, Bergbauer will oversee The Hartford’s International Choice portfolio of insurance products for U.S. organizations with global operations and risks, and includes a partnership with AXA Corporate Solutions to offer local insurance coverage in up to 150 countries.

“International represents an excellent opportunity to expand our offerings, expertise and geographic reach to help drive Middle Market’s growth strategy,” said David Carter, executive vice president for Middle Market at The Hartford. “Alfred’s extensive leadership and international experience will help drive our strategy forward and position The Hartford to be our customers’ first choice for total global insurance protection.”

Bergbauer joined The Hartford with nearly 30 years of executive, risk management and underwriting experience in international property and casualty insurance in the U.S., Hong Kong, the Philippines and the People’s Republic of China. Prior to joining The Hartford, Bergbauer held multinational and international casualty leadership roles with XL Catlin, Marsh USA, Inc., and ACE USA. Bergbauer holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Marietta College and a Master of Business Administration from Babson College.

The Hartford International Choice portfolio of insurance products and services include:

  • The Hartford Exporters Package Policy, designed for U.S. organizations that are engaged in international commerce or travel but do not have permanent employees or physical worksites outside the U.S.
  • The Hartford’s Master Policy, designed for U.S.-based multinational organizations that have a physical presence (assets, employees, or operations) in one or more countries outside the U.S.
  • The Hartford’s Controlled Master Program, packages The Hartford’s Master Policy and insurance services with local admitted policies offered through AXA Corporate Solutions’ network in a single coordinated insurance program for a U.S. company’s international risks.
